Howard graduated in 1989 from University College Dental School, London. He spent two years working in junior hospital posts in oral surgery and oral medicine in Basingstoke and Bristol before moving into restorative dentistry. He then spent three years training as a registrar at Cardiff Dental Hospital and the Eastman Dental Hospital, London.

Whilst at the Eastman, he undertook a two-year MSc in endodontics, graduating with distinction, and entered full-time endodontic practice in 1996, being accredited by the General Dental Council as a specialist in endodontics in 1998. He started his own referral practice in Maidenhead, Berkshire in September 2000.

He has been a part-time teacher in clinical endodontics at the Eastman Dental Institute and has run practical courses for general practitioners around the UK. He has also been an invited speaker at a number of national and international endodontic meetings and has spoken at conferences around the world.

He has been Honorary Treasurer of the British Endodontic Society and is currently its European Representative and President-Elect. He is a member of the British Society for Restorative Dentistry, the American Association of Endodontists, the International Association of Dento-Maxillo-Facial Radiology and is a certified member of the European Society of Endodontology.
